We realize problems can occur at any time. Access and availability to care are cornerstones of our practice. Dental emergencies are almost always seen the same day. Please call our office at 304-252-4141.
Tips for Dealing with Dental Emergencies
Toothache –Gently use dental floss or an inter-dental cleaner to ensure that there is no food or other debris caught between the teeth. Either heat or cold may help to alleviate the pain. Find out which works better for you. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller against the gums near the aching tooth because it may burn the gum tissue. If the pain persists, contact us.
Broken Tooth – Clean the specific area with water. Use ice to keep any swelling down. Call us immediately. If at all possible, save the piece of tooth that was broken and bring it with you.
Tooth Completely Knocked Out – Hold the tooth by the crown and rinse off the root of the tooth in water if it is dirty. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, gently insert and hold the tooth in its socket. If that isn't possible, put the tooth in a cup of milk and contact us as quickly as possible. Remember to bring the tooth with you.
Bitten Lip or Tongue – Clean the area gently with a cloth and apply ice to reduce swelling. If the bleeding persists, go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Possible Broken Jaw -- Apply ice to control swelling. Proceed to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Objects Lodged Between Teeth – Try to remove the object with dental floss while avoiding cutting the gums. Never use a sharp instrument to remove any object that is stuck between your teeth. If you are unable to dislodge the object using dental floss, contact us.
