Root Canal

What is a root canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

How is a root canal performed?

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend root canal or endodontic treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. We use local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia if requested. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

Preparing for your root canal procedure

Proper preparation is key to ensuring your root canal procedure goes smoothly and comfortably. In the days leading up to your appointment, continue your regular oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing, but be gentle around the affected tooth. If you’re experiencing significant pain before your scheduled treatment, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help manage discomfort — just follow the dosage instructions and inform Dr. Williams of any medications you’re taking.

It’s important to eat a good meal before your appointment, as your mouth may be numb for several hours afterward. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours before the procedure, as these can interfere with healing and anesthesia effectiveness. Make sure to get a good night’s sleep before your visit to help your body prepare for the procedure.

If you develop severe, unbearable pain or facial swelling before your scheduled appointment, don’t hesitate to contact us immediately. As the emergency dentist Beckley WV trusts, Dr. Williams is available to address urgent situations that can’t wait. Bring a list of all medications you’re currently taking, including supplements, and inform us of any changes in your health status since your last visit. Following these simple preparation steps will help ensure the best possible outcome for your root canal treatment.

Post-Operative Care Instructions

After your root canal procedure, following proper post-operative care is essential for successful healing and preventing complications. It’s normal to experience some mild discomfort for a few days following treatment. Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen are usually sufficient to manage any discomfort. Take medications as directed and don’t exceed recommended dosages.

For the first 24 hours, avoid chewing on the treated tooth and stick to soft foods like yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes. Avoid extremely hot or cold foods and beverages, as the treated area may be sensitive. Don’t smoke or use tobacco products, as these can significantly delay healing and increase the risk of complications.

Maintain good oral hygiene by gently brushing and flossing, but be careful around the treated area. Rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in 8 ounces of warm water) several times daily to help reduce swelling and promote healing. If you experience severe pain that worsens after 2-3 days, significant swelling, or if your temporary filling falls out, contact our office immediately.

Most patients can return to normal activities the day after treatment, but avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours. Remember to schedule your follow-up appointment for the permanent restoration, as the temporary filling is not meant to be a long-term solution.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed your tooth can then be restored.  The type of restoration will depend on the quality of the remaining tooth structure.  Most of the time a crown will be necessary to adequately restore the tooth, however onlays, inlays, and tooth colored fillings are sometimes indicated.  It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will it cost?

The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.
